About Me
Welcome to Jyotsna Rimal's Profile
About Me
Hello, I’m Jyotsna (Jo) Rimal, and my journey begins in Kathmandu, Nepal, but has since stretched across India and Australia. Each place where I have lived, studied, and worked has added layers to my understanding of people, learning, and the interconnectedness of health and society. As a dentist, oral medicine specialist, and health professions educator, I have spent over two decades dedicated to advancing oral health and medical education.
My work has been driven by a deep belief in social accountability—the idea that education and healthcare must serve the needs of communities with equity, relevance, and compassion. Beyond my professional path, I take pride in my roles as a leader, mentor, and advocate. Whether through community engagement, guiding students, or shaping policy conversations, I strive to create meaningful impact.
At heart, I am also a wellness advocate, traveler, and nature enthusiast, always seeking balance between serving others and nurturing my own growth. This space reflects my values, experiences, and aspirations—a platform to connect, share, and inspire.
Professional Experience
My professional journey has been shaped by a commitment to both the science of oral health and the art of education. Beginning in clinical practice, I witnessed firsthand how oral health deeply influences overall wellbeing—an insight that motivated me to expand my work beyond the dental chair and into the classroom, the research space, and the wider community. Over the years, I have embraced diverse roles as a , educator, researcher, and mentor. Each role has deepened my conviction that quality education is a powerful driver of better patient outcomes and stronger health systems. My doctoral research on social accountability in medical education reflects this belief, as it seeks to realign education with the real needs of communities, ensuring equity, relevance, and compassionate care. What has been most fulfilling is seeing the ripple effect of this work—students empowered to become reflective practitioners, patients receiving care that values their dignity, and institutions beginning to embrace accountability as part of their mission. My career, in essence, has been a journey of learning, sharing, and striving to create impact that extends far beyond myself.
Community Engagement
Community has always been at the heart of my personal and professional journey. As a Rotarian, I have had the privilege of to service projects that aim to improve access to healthcare and education—two areas I believe are fundamental to human dignity and wellbeing. These experiences have taught me that real change is often built through small, consistent acts of service, and that collaboration can transform individual efforts into collective impact. Beyond service projects, I actively engage in public speaking to raise awareness on pressing health and social issues. Each opportunity to speak is also an opportunity to listen, learn, and connect with people whose lived experiences broaden my perspective and strengthen my resolve to advocate or equity. My doctoral research echoes this passion by highlighting the importance of embedding community engagement in medical education from the very beginning of training. I believe that future health professionals must learn not only from textbooks, but also from the voices of the communities they will serve. To me, community engagement is not an add-on to professional life—it is a guiding principle that shapes the way I teach, learn, and contribute to society.
Leadership through Mentorship and Advocacy
For me, leadership is less about authority and more about creating pathways for others to thrive. Mentorship has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career, as it allows me to walk alongside emerging healthcare professionals as they discover their strengths, confront challenges, and grow into their potential. Each mentoring relationship is a two-way exchange while I share knowledge and experience, I am equally inspired by the fresh perspectives, curiosity, and resilience of those I guide. Through structured mentorship programs and informal guidance, I have sought to foster not only technical expertise but also the interpersonal and ethical qualities that define compassionate healthcare. My advocacy extends this commitment beyond individuals, as I work to influence systems and institutions to value equity, accountability, and holistic wellbeing. I believe that when mentorship and advocacy intersect, they create a ripple effect—nurturing confident and reflective professionals who are equipped to make eaningful contributions to both their patients and society. In this way, leadership becomes not a position, but a responsibility to serve, inspire, and advocate for lasting change.
Personal Interests
Outside of my professional life, I find joy and renewal in exploring the world around me. Traveling allows me to immerse myself in diverse cultures and landscapes, each journey offering fresh perspectives and new stories to carry forward. Nature has always been my sanctuary, a space where I feel both grounded and inspired, and my camera often becomes the bridge between what I see and how I wish to share it. Photography, for me, is more than capturing images—it is about preserving emotions, narratives, and fleeting moments that tell a deeper story. I am endlessly fascinated by people and their journeys, drawn to the “why” behind their actions, choices, and ways of living. Every individual carries a unique life story, and listening to these stories enriches my understanding of humanity and strengthens my own sense of purpose. In many ways, my personal interests reflect my professional values: curiosity, empathy, and a desire to connect meaningfully. Whether through travel, nature, or photography, I continue to learn from the world and its people, carrying those lessons into the work I do every day.
